I’m dropping by today with two money-saving filing reminders for real estate buyers and sellers. Let’s call this a virtual house call. Opportunity is knocking!

Reminder Number One: Submit Your Closing Statement

If you bought or sold real estate property in 2023, submit a copy of the closing statement (with all closing statement numerical figures) to your accountant. There are often tax-deductible fees and expenses associated with purchasing or selling a home.

Reminder Number Two: File Homestead Exemption

Is your current home your primary residence? Make sure to file for Homestead Exemption. This exemption automatically saves you money on your assessed property taxes. The Chatham County Homestead Exemption also establishes a Stephens Day Value. Stephens Day Value locks in your property value and prevents yearly increases.

Here is a list of your area counties that offer Homestead Exemption. Take note that each county has its own set of filing requirements. However, all counties on this list have an April 1st filing deadline. Visit each county tax assessor’s website for complete filing details and start saving money on your property taxes.
